Live baccarat has a reputation as a high-roller’s game, but it is actually the simplest table in the live casino. There are no playing decisions to agonise over: you bet on one of three outcomes, the dealer follows a fixed set of rules, and the hand closest to nine wins. That simplicity, combined with a low house edge, is why it has become a staple at every Canadian live casino.

How live baccarat works

Two hands are dealt — the Player hand and the Banker hand. These are just names for the two sides; you can bet on either, or on a Tie. Each hand gets two cards to start, and card values are added together with only the last digit counting (so a 7 and an 8 make 15, which scores as 5). Tens and face cards count as zero, aces as one.

Whether a third card is drawn is decided entirely by fixed rules, not by you or the dealer. If either hand totals 8 or 9 from the first two cards — a “natural” — the round ends immediately. Otherwise the drawing rules determine the rest. The hand closest to nine wins, and a winning Player bet pays 1:1, a winning Banker bet pays 1:1 minus a 5% commission, and a Tie typically pays 8:1.

The bets and their true odds

The maths in baccarat is refreshingly clear:

  • Banker — house edge about 1.06%. The best bet on the table, even after commission, because it wins fractionally more often.
  • Player — house edge about 1.24%. Almost as good, with no commission.
  • Tie — house edge around 14%. Avoid it; the occasional 8:1 payout does not come close to making up for how rarely it lands.

The practical takeaway: stick to Banker or Player, ignore the Tie, and ignore side bets unless you are purely playing for fun.

Live baccarat variants

Canadian live studios offer several flavours. Punto Banco is the standard game described above. Speed Baccarat compresses each round to around 27 seconds for players who want more hands per hour. Squeeze Baccarat slows things down instead, with the dealer revealing cards gradually for tension. Lightning Baccarat and similar game-show hybrids add random multipliers to selected cards each round — entertaining, but they raise the house edge, so treat them as a different, higher-variance game.

FAQ

Is live baccarat hard to learn?
No — it is one of the easiest casino games. You simply bet on Player, Banker or Tie; the dealer follows fixed drawing rules and the hand closest to nine wins. There are no decisions to make once you've placed your bet.
What is the best bet in baccarat?
Banker. It wins slightly more often and carries the lowest house edge (about 1.06% after the 5% commission). Player is close behind at 1.24%. Avoid the Tie bet — its edge is around 14%.
Why is there a commission on Banker bets?
Because the Banker bet wins more often than Player, casinos take a 5% commission on Banker wins to keep their edge. Some 'no-commission' tables exist but adjust payouts instead.
What live baccarat variants are there?
Punto Banco is the standard. Speed Baccarat runs faster rounds, Squeeze Baccarat adds a slow card reveal, and Lightning Baccarat applies random multipliers for a higher edge.
Where can I play live baccarat in Canada?
In Ontario, at Ontario-licensed operators (see below). Elsewhere, through your provincial operator such as PlayNow or Espacejeux.
Can I count cards in baccarat?
Not usefully. Baccarat outcomes are nearly independent and the edge from any counting system is tiny and impractical online.
